Started by the Kollektiv #workoutjazz in 2019, „madness“ has been a series of themed happenings taking place in countless different venues all across Zürich. While “madness” focuses on experimental music in all its facets, it is open to all kinds of time-based art forms.
What distinguishes “madness” from any other concert night is intensity, as well as the strong focus on event dramaturgy, blending and juxtaposing performances and artists from the many different niches, genres and subscenes of Zürich and beyond.
This 20th edition is titled "Spinnerei". In our understanding the spinning wheel also stands for the circular movement found in windmills and turbines as well as other technical devices and instruments. It might even reference the dynamic between folklore and industrialization, between machine music and traditional sound forging.
In a metaphorical sense we’re also interested in spinning and weaving, knitting and condensing. Weaving a common thread through the event, intertwining language and sound.
Last but not least “spinnen” also means being crazy in German, throwing us back to the general inspiration of the “madness” series.
